About the role:
We are seeking an experienced Agronomist to lead and maximize the productivity of a large-scale hydroponic greenhouse operation in Angola. This is a hands-on, on-site role where you will combine agronomy expertise with leadership, training, and operational oversight. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring sustainable, profitable, and innovative agricultural practices while supporting the local management team in day-to-day operations.
The ideal candidate is an experienced Agronomist with a solid background in greenhouse management, hydroponic systems, and soilless cultivation techniques, including fertigation, crop nutrition, and integrated pest management. They bring hands-on expertise in precision agriculture, advanced greenhouse technologies, and post-harvest processes, along with proven leadership in training and developing teams. Adaptable and data-driven, they are fluent in English, experienced in multicultural or international agricultural projects, and ready to relocate full-time to Angola to ensure sustainable, high-yield, and profitable operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Crop Planning & Strategy: Design and implement crop production plans in coordination with the farm board. Recommend optimal vegetable varieties based on profitability, yields, and market demand.
- Operational Oversight: Supervise daily greenhouse and field operations, including agromechanical tasks and all relevant production activities.
- Team Leadership & Development: Build and develop a highly skilled local workforce. Support staff recruitment, training, and mentoring to ensure excellence in controlled environment agriculture (CEA).
- Crop Management: Develop and execute crop nutrition programs, manage irrigation and fertigation, diagnose and control pests and diseases, and oversee pollination, pruning, harvesting, and post-harvest processes.
- Data-Driven Optimization: Collect, analyze, and act on agronomic and production data to continuously improve yields, quality, and profitability.
- Knowledge Transfer: Train and upskill local staff on modern hydroponic and greenhouse practices, embedding a culture of innovation and best practice.
- Innovation & Research: Stay ahead of emerging trends, technologies, and methods in greenhouse and hydroponic systems, integrating them into farm practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in greenhouse management, hydroponics, and crop production techniques and 2 years' experience overseeing employee teams in commercial scale operations.
- In-depth knowledge of advanced greenhouse technologies, soilless cultivation methods, and precision agriculture practices.
- Ability to adapt to changing conditions and implement innovative approaches to improve crop yields and quality.
- Understanding of budgeting and resource management for greenhouse operations.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills to manage a team effectively.
- Proficiency in the use of basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Experience working in multicultural teams or international agricultural projects preferred.
- English proficiency is mandatory. Portuguese Professional verbal and written level (advantage or Spanish as mother language.
